1. What is a Commercial Vehicle?

A commercial vehicle is any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle engaged in commerce that is used to transport property or passengers when the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight or gross combination vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more, is designed or used to transport 15 or more passengers including the driver, or is used to transport hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.

2. What is the futherance of commerce?

Vehicles are operating under the furtherance of commerce when money earned is declared as income from a business for tax purposes, costs for the underlying activities are deducted as a business expense for tax purposes, products and/or money is accepted for advertising a sponsor, or the transport vehicle is being used in the furtherance of a commercial operation.

3. Do I need a US DOT number?

If your commercial vehicles travel outside the state of Kansas you will need a US DOT number. If your vehicle fits the definition of a Commercial Vehicle, is engaged in the furtherance of commerce, and does not fall under one of the exemptions, you will need a US DOT number. 4. What information will be needed to register a commercial vehicle?

All Commercial Motor Vehicle Account Holders will provide the following information to register all power units and trailers: Department of Transportation Number (DOT#), garage address of vehicle, Tax identification Number (TIN#), either a renewal notice or VIN or cab card, Heavy Use Tax Form HUT 2290 (if listed weight rating is over 54,000), and current proof of insurance for each vehicle involved. Depending on the situation additional information may also be required.

5. What are your office hours?

Both Butler County Motor Vehicle Office locations are open between 8 AM and 4:30 PM, including lunch hour, Monday through Friday. Title work must be at a clerk's window by 4 PM. Commercial Motor Vehicle transactions must be at a clerk's window by 2 PM in order to be processed. Title work consists of changing the way a title reads. This can include, but is not limited to: registering a vehicle in your (or another person's name using a power of attorney) for the first time, adding or changing the listed lienholder, adding or changing a transfer on death designee, removing or adding an owner, or titling the vehicle as an antique for the first time (regardless of whether the vehicle's ownership is changing).

6. Where are you located?

Butler County has two Motor Vehicle Office locations. The main office is located on the second floor of the historic Butler County Courthouse at 205 W Central, El Dorado, KS 67042. The Western Office is located near the Augusta Municipal Airport at 4800 W Beech Dr #10, Augusta, KS 67010.
