Butler County is located within the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which gives the county access to a broad employment pool. In 2010 the U.S. Department of Labor estimated that the county had a civilian labor force of 32,160, of those employed the average wage per job in 2009 was $31,623.

In terms of labor relations, Kansas is a right-to-work state, per the Kansas constitution. No labor unions may attempt to collect service fees from workers who choose not to join the union. The Wichita MSA private sector workforce unionization rate is 7.8% compared to 6.9% for the national private sector workforce. Outside the aircraft plants, only 0.9% of the Wichita MSAs private workforce is unionized.
