2023 Renter's Insurance Awareness Campaign

Background:
Since June 2022, the Long-Term Recovery Committee has been working with survivors of the April 29th tornado that impacted the City of Andover and surrounding rural areas. Not surprisingly, those people facing the most significant challenges after the tornado were those who were either under-insured or had nApril 29 Renters Impactso insurance at all.  And one of the most impacted groups has been renters who did not have renter's insurance.

In August 2022, the Community Foundation of Central Kansas made grant funding available for projects that support community preparedness and resilience, especially in under-served areas.  With the tornado experience in mind, a group comprised of representatives from the City of Andover, Butler County Emergency Management, the Butler County Health Department, and South Central Mental Health pursued and received funding for a renter's insurance awareness campaign.

Renter's Insurance Grant Program:
As part of this renter's insurance awareness campaign, a limited number of one-time grants are currently available to assist uninsured renters in Butler County with purchasing their first renter's insurance policy. For more information about this program visit the FAQs below.  If you would like to apply for this grant opportunity, click on the button to access the application form.Application Button Opens in new window

Renter's Insurance Grant Program FAQs

  • Why do I need renter's insurance?
If your home or apartment is damaged by something like a fire or tornado, your landlord's insurance only covers repairs to the building.  None of your personal belongings are covered. Without insurance, you may be left to replace all of these items out-of-pocket.
  • How do I apply for the renter's insurance grant?
All you need to do is fill out the online application to the best of your ability. You will be contacted later this summer if you have been chosen to receive funds.
  • What is the money used for?
This money was awarded by the Central Kansas Community Foundation and will be used to help selected applicants pay for the first six months of renter's insurance.
  • Can I reapply again once the six months are over?
At the moment, this is a one-time grant opportunity.  However, if we are able to open another round of awards after the first distributions, we will announce that.
  • What are the next steps?
If you are selected, we will work with you and your insurance provider to transfer funds for your new policy.
  • What if I have questions that aren't answered here?
If you have additional questions, use our Contact Us form to reach out to the program representatives.
