Refunding a License Plate

In-State Refunds

If you dispose of a vehicle before the end of your licensing period and the plate isn't being transferred to another vehicle, you may be eligible for a partial refund on the property taxes and registration fees that were paid the last time the vehicle was registered. Refunds are calculated from the month all necessary items are received and checks will be received in the mail within 2-3 weeks of turning in all necessary items. No refunds will be issued under $5.00. It is important that you apply for your refund as soon as possible after disposing of the vehicle in order to receive the maximum refund.



You will need to bring in the following listed items:
  • The current Kansas license plate with current decal
  • The current Kansas motor vehicle registration
  • If you do not have your Kansas owner registration you may send a $1.00 check or money order
  • Completed Refund Application
Refunding a Leased Vehicle
If the vehicle was leased make sure to have a copy of the original lease agreement to confirm the lessee was responsible for paying all official licensing fees and taxes along with the above-listed items.

Refunding Vehicles in a Trust
If the vehicle was titled in a trust be sure to complete a Certificate of Trust (TR-81) and include it along with the above-listed items.

Out of State Refunds

If you register a vehicle out of the state of Kansas you may be eligible for a partial refund for the property taxes that were paid the last time the vehicle was registered in Kansas. Refunds are calculated from the month all necessary items are received and checks will be received in the mail within 2-3 weeks of turning in all necessary items. No refunds will be issued under $5.00. It is important that you apply for your refund as soon as possible after registering the vehicle in a different state in order to receive the maximum refund.

You will need to mail in the following listed items:
  • The current Kansas license plate and current decal
  • The current Kansas motor vehicle registration
  • If you do not have your Kansas owner registration you may send a $1.00 check or money order
  • A copy of the current out-of-state motor vehicle registration
  • A copy of current out-of state (not Kansas) driver's license
  • Completed Refund Application
