Military Requirements

Kansas Resident Military Personnel



Pursuant to Kansas statute 79-5107(e) up to 2 motor vehicles may qualify for exemption from personal property taxation in Kansas if the following criteria are met:
  • The military person claims Kansas as his/her permanent state of residence as evidenced on their LES
  • Full time military personnel mobilized and/or deployed out of state on the date application for registration of the vehicle(s) is made
  • National Guard or Reserves mobilized under Title 10 or 32 in receipt of orders to report for active duty on a certain date
  • The military person is shown on the title as the legal owner of the motor vehicle(s) for which the exemption is requested
  • The motor vehicle is not used in a trade or business
If the criteria above is met the following listed documents must be submitted to register or renew a vehicle license plate with a personal property tax exemption:
  • Current full month LES
  • Current orders or ORB or ERB
  • Completed Kansas Military Personnel Affidavit for Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption (TR-601)
  • Current military ID
  • Renewal form from the Kansas Department of Revenue or plate number(s) or VIN(s) of the vehicle(s) being renewed
  • Current proof of insurance
  • Drivers License
  • Payment
The above listed documents must be brought in every time a vehicle is registered or renewed to receive the exemption. The date of registering the vehicle must fall within the mobilization dates listed on the orders. Leased vehicles are not exempt from personal property taxes because the leasing company is the vehicle's legal owner.

Non-Kansas Military Personnel


Military personnel not claiming Kansas as their home state of record have the option of registering in the county they reside in or in their home state of record. If the military person registers vehicles in the state of Kansas, they may be eligible for exemption from personal property taxation. THIS EXEMPTION APPLIES TO PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES ONLY. It does not apply to sales tax or fees. All of the following criteria must be met in order to receive the exemption:
  • The military person is shown on the title as a legal owner of the motor vehicle(s) for which the exemption is requested
  • The military person is in the full-time, regular military service of the United States
  • The military person is absent from his/her permanent residence solely by reason of military orders
  • The military person is stationed in Kansas and resides in Butler County
  • The motor vehicle is not used in a trade or business
  • At the time of registration / renewal the vehicle(s) is/are kept or being used in Butler County
If the criteria above is met the following listed documents must be submitted to register or renew a vehicle license plate with a personal property tax exemption:
  • Current full month LES.
  • Current orders or ORB or ERB

  • Current military ID
  • Renewal form from the Kansas Department of Revenue or plate number(s) or VIN(s) of the vehicle(s) being renewed
