Training & Standards Division
About the Division
The Training and Standards Division is overseen by Sergeant Tom Gresham. Other deputies assigned to this division typically work as training coordinators. The Training and Standards Division also utilizes deputies with various specializations from other divisions to help with internal training requirements.
This division is responsible for a wide variety of duties. The primary function is in coordinating, reporting, and documenting all departmental training. Every law enforcement officer in the State of Kansas is required to complete no less than 40 hours of continuing education per year, and the Training and Standards Division ensures this requirement is met for all deputies. This includes maintaining several training programs for approximately 60 commissioned deputies and selective training for the Detention Division as necessary.
The Training and Standards Division also ensures that deputies are kept proficient and up-to-date on current law enforcement procedures, legislation, and case law. The Training and Standards Division also manages mandated departmental compliance and certification related issues.
New Deputy Training
The Training and Standards Division also is responsible for the hiring and testing process for commissioned deputy positions. All new deputies report to the division to obtain a brief departmental familiarization while attending the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). Any full-time law enforcement officer working for the Butler County Sheriff's Office must obtain certification through a stringent 14-week basic law enforcement certification program through KLETC, unless the candidate already possesses qualifying certification. This training curriculum is dictated by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (KS-CPOST) and covers a broad range of law-enforcement training topics to prepare them for these duties.
